The Year of St. Francis of Assisi
On January 10, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV established the 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭. 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐢 on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the saint’s Transitus to Heaven.
The initiative was proclaimed through a Decree issued by the Apostolic Penitentiary of the Holy See, which states that from January 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027, it is possible to obtain a Plenary Indulgence, under the usual conditions, by making a pilgrimage to any Franciscan conventual church or place of worship dedicated to St. Francis anywhere in the world.
The Decree also establishes that the elderly, the sick, and those who, for serious reasons, are unable to leave their homes may obtain the Plenary Indulgence by spiritually joining the Jubilee celebrations and offering their prayers, sufferings, or hardships to God.

El Año de San Francisco de Asís
El 10 de enero, Su Santidad el Papa León XIV estableció el 𝐀𝐧̃𝐨 𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨 𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐬𝐢́𝐬 con ocasión del 800.º aniversario del Tránsito al Cielo del santo.
La iniciativa fue proclamada mediante un Decreto emitido por la Penitenciaría Apostólica de la Santa Sede, en el cual se establece que desde el 10 de enero de 2026 hasta el 10 de enero de 2027 es posible obtener la Indulgencia Plenaria, bajo las condiciones habituales, realizando una peregrinación a cualquier iglesia conventual franciscana o lugar de culto dedicado a San Francisco en cualquier parte del mundo.
El Decreto también establece que los ancianos, los enfermos y quienes, por motivos graves, no puedan salir de sus hogares, podrán obtener la Indulgencia Plenaria uniéndose espiritualmente a las celebraciones jubilares y ofreciendo a Dios sus oraciones, sufrimientos o dificultades.

Eight churches in the Diocese of San Diego have been named by Bishop Michael Pham as pilgrimage sites for the “Year of St. Francis.”
Pope Leo XIV has declared a “Year of St. Francis” from Jan. 10, 2026, to Jan. 10, 2027, to celebrate the eighth centenary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi.
A special plenary indulgence “under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father)” is available to those who make a pilgrimage during the Year of St. Francis to any Franciscan conventual church or place of worship associated with him and follow the Jubilee rites or spend suitable time in prayer to God for an increase of Christian charity and peace, concluding with the Our Father, the Creed and invocations to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Clare and all the saints of the Franciscan Family.
Bishop Pham has designated the following churches as the pilgrimage sites in the San Diego Diocese: Immaculate Conception Parish, Old Town; Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá; St. Francis Chapel at Mission San Diego de Alcalá; Old Mission San Luis Rey, Oceanside; San Luis Rey Parish, Oceanside; St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Imperial; St. Didacus Parish, San Diego; and St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Vista.
The elderly, sick and homebound also will be able to obtain the plenary indulgence by spiritually joining the Jubilee celebrations and offering their prayers, pains or sufferings to God.
Ocho iglesias de la Diócesis de San Diego han sido nombradas por el obispo Michael Pham como sitios de peregrinación para el “Año de San Francisco”.
El papa León XIV ha declarado un “Año de San Francisco” del 10 de enero de 2026 al 10 de enero de 2027, para celebrar el octavo centenario de la muerte de San Francisco de Asís.
Se concede una indulgencia plenaria especial “en las condiciones habituales (confesión sacramental, comunión eucarística y oración por las intenciones del Santo Padre)” a quienes realicen una peregrinación durante el Año de San Francisco a cualquier iglesia conventual franciscana o lugar de culto asociado con él y sigan los ritos jubilares, o dediquen un tiempo adecuado a la oración a Dios por el aumento de la caridad cristiana y la paz, concluyendo con el Padre Nuestro, el Credo y las invocaciones a la Santísima Virgen María, a San Francisco de Asís, a Santa Clara y a todos los santos de la familia franciscana.
El obispo Pham ha designado las siguientes iglesias como sitios de peregrinación en la Diócesis de San Diego: Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción, Old Town; Basílica Misión San Diego de Alcalá; Capilla de San Francisco en la Misión San Diego de Alcalá; Antigua Misión San Luis Rey, Oceanside; Parroquia San Luis Rey, Oceanside; Parroquia San Antonio de Padua, Imperial; Parroquia San Diego (St. Didacus), San Diego; y Parroquia San Francisco de Asís, Vista.
Las personas mayores, enfermas y confinadas en sus hogares también podrán obtener la indulgencia plenaria uniéndose espiritualmente a las celebraciones jubilares y ofreciendo sus oraciones, dolores o sufrimientos a Dios.
